The Gnat Boxer Square Dance Club provided Western-style square dance lessons on Monday evenings at Ida Sue School beginning Oct. 11, 2021, culminating in the promotion of eight square dancers at its annual graduation ceremony on Monday, March 28.

Graduates include one mainstream dancer — Stellah Steiner — and seven plus-level dancers: Sherry Akers, Bob Hange, Carol Kirkstadt, Chuck and Veronica Mullen, Barb Stoll, and Angela Steiner. In addition to the eight graduating students receiving their diplomas, six Gnat Boxer members — Dan Hendricks, Carissa Kirksey, Patricia Kirksey, Judy Koppert, Dan Reinarts and Melodie Steiner — each earned Angel Certificates for helping with lessons.

The graduating Class of 2022 is the first class to graduate since the passing of longtime club caller Dick Mackey. Neil Harnar, who also teaches for Norton Grand Squares in Norton, taught the lessons this year, continuing Mackey’s legacy. The graduation ceremony was held in the gymnasium of Ida Sue School. The evening included a trivia-style game, square dancing and more.

The Gnat Boxers originally started in 1959 as a summer YMCA program and have a history in Wooster. Each fall the club offers lessons to the residents of Wayne County. For more information about lessons, call Patty Reinarts at 330-641-2395. The club also can be found on Facebook at Gnat Boxers-Wooster or online at
