New Towne Gallery of Millersburg invites the public to its first show of the season, “A Glimpse of Divinity,” an opening show and artist reception featuring the iconography of artist Paul Tish.

The event is open to the public and will be held at the Holmes Center for the Arts on Saturday, April 9 from 5-8 p.m.

For those unfamiliar with iconography, the event is an opportunity for a glimpse into one of Christianity’s oldest forms of religious art and to meet the artist creating it. Sacred icons are depictions, painted in a particular style, of Christ, his mother, the angels and holy people or saints. Icon is a Greek word and simply means an image or portrait of someone. And so these images are a means of coming to know the holy people depicted in them.

Tish was born in Millersburg in 1963. As an artist he has explored different media over the years, but in fall 2009 he attended a workshop on iconography and became fascinated with the art form and the history of icons. He went on to complete further training on the creation of icons and since 2012 has painted or written approximately 120 icons. The event will feature a collection of new icons, some of which will be available to purchase.

The address of the new Holmes Center for the Arts is 5200 state Route 39, just west of Berlin. For more information call New Towne Gallery at 330-473-6027 or email
