What started out as an overcast day with a threat of rain ended well for 35 local disc golfers at the Deer Run Spring Disc Golf Tournament on May 14. Sponsored by the Holmes County Disc Golf Club and Keim Lumber in Charm, players traveled to Millersburg from as far away as Canton and Newark to play what has become one of Ohio’s highest-rated disc golf courses.

“I can’t remember when I have watched such good disc golf on our course,” tournament director Doug Gray said. “It is a tough, wooded course. What is really surprising are these young boys who are just hitting their teen years and they are just ripping the disc. They are throwing good, clean lines, they have advanced forehand throws and their putting is accurate.

“In fact, both aces on the day where by younger players — Alan Hilton and Andrew Beun. That excites me. They are the future of disc golf.”

The lead was tight going into the final nine holes, with Matthias Hilty holding a one-stroke lead over Brandon Yoder and Michael Wells, Jr.

Hilty, however, coming off a staggering 8-under on the short 9 to tie the course record, was able to add one stroke to his lead, winning the tournament with a commanding 15-under on the day. Taking second was Brandon Yoder with 13-under and Nicholas Blair at 12-under. The win was a bit of redemption for Hilty, who lost the winter tournament to Glendon Yoder in a playoff. This time Hilty came out ahead. Winning the Closest to Pin award was Hilty, and the Longest Drive went to Yoder.

For those interested, the HCDGC runs competitive play every Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Deer Run course. Cash payouts happen each night with a running ace pool. Future tournament dates can be found at the group’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/groups/holmesdiscgolf.

Disc golf discs can be borrowed from the Holmes Country Library, and a large selection of discs and bags can be purchased at Keim.
